On behalf of all of at St. Augustine Composite Squadron, SER-FL-173, headquartered at the St. Augustine Airport (KSGJ), I thank you for your interest in Civil Air Patrol, and welcome you to our website.

We invite you to go through our website, as this will tell you more about us, and what we do for our community, state and nation. However, the best way to learn more about all the varied opportunities in Civil Air Patrol is to visit us during our monthly meetings, and see firsthand. Come and meet our officers, ask questions and see if CAP is for you.

About St. Augustine Composite Squadron SER-FL-173

The St. Augustine Composite Squadron is part of the Civil Air Patrol an auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Originally a Senior Unit, in June 2009 the Squadron was transformed into a Composite Unit. The St Augustine Composite Squadron is a volunteer organization comprised of young and senior members ages of 12 and up. The members of the Squadron participate in search and rescue missions in the south Florida region, work with local governments in training and provide support for emergency services during disasters such as hurricanes, and provide support for both drug enforcement agencies and the United States Air Force. The Civil Air Patrol provides training in aerospace education, emergency support, and communications at the squadron level for both Senior Officers and Cadets. Search and Rescue (SAR) and service in the community are the primary goals of the squadron.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

23Jun10 - SER-173 HAS MOVED!

  • St Augustine, FL. After a great year at the St Augustine High School (SAHS) JROTC location, the St Augustine Composite Squadron has returned back to the St Augustine Airport (SGJ).
  • The St Augustine Squadron will conduct its weekly meetings and CAP operations at the new St. Augustine/St. Johns County Airport Authority building located at 4730 Casa Cola Way, St Augustine Airport, St Augustine, FL 32095. Meeting time is unchanged and the building is open to the public.
  • Many thanks to SAHS and JROTC for allowing the St Augustine Squadron to use their facilites. We will continue our partnernship with them as we move forward to new places and set new goals.

09Dec09 - LATEST NEWS

  • St Augustine High School - St. Augustine, Florida. Several CAP cadets completed the Curry Achievement Test and all cadets participated in a physical training test. The cadets are working towards and preparing for the Orientation Glider Flights.
  • Other training sessions must also be completed before cadets are eligible for the orientation flights. The physical fitness test consisted of running one-mile or successfully completing the shuttle run. CAP cadets also had to achieve success by completing two of the following: push-ups, 12-50; sit and reach, 24 centimeters or curl ups, 22-40 in one and a half minutes.
  • The cadets must also fulfill the requirements for the Wing Runner Course and pass the final exam.

09Sep09 - PROSPECTIVE MEMBER ORIENTATION

  • On Wednesday, September 9th, 2009, the St Augustine Composite Squadron will be presenting a CAP Orientation brief to the open public

04Sep09 - CAP VISIT TO THE ST AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL

  • The staff of the St Augustine Composite Squadron visited the St Augustine High School to brief students about the benefits og been a Cadet member

25Jun09 - CHANGE OF COMMAND

  • Effective 25 Jun 2009 the St. Augustine Squadron (SER-FL-173) officially change command with the depart of Mike (Gunner) Thompson, Lt Col, CAP.
  • Squadron command is now assumed by Ralph Aviles, Capt CAP.
  • Congratulations to Ralph Aviles, Capt CAP, on the new appointment.
  • Capt Aviles has a lot of new goals and ideas in mind for the squadron.
  • New top priorities for the squadron include:
    1. Start a new CADET Program in 2009
    2. Organize and maintain a mission-ready ground team
    3. Update/obtain mission equipment
    4. Provide training to members on a regular basis

05Jun09 - Squadron Status Change

  • We are pleased to announce that beginning June 05, 2009 the St Augustine Squadron has now transformed into a Composite Squadron.
  • In the next few weeks the new St Augustine Composite Squadron will start accepting applications from interested young members between the ages and 12 to 17 to participate in the new and first Cadet Unit program.

05Jun09 - Member promotion

  • Congratulations to Hugo Morales for his promotion to the rank of 1Lt, CAP

01Jun09 - Staff appointments

  • Congratulations to Justin Adkinson, 1Lt, CAP for his new appointment to Assistant Deputy Commander at the St Augustine Senior Squadron SER-FL-173.

13May09 - Member promotion

  • Congratulations to Ralph Aviles for his promotion to the rank of Captain, CAP.

07May09 - Command changes

  • Starting immediately Ralph Aviles, 1Lt, CAP has temporarily assumed the position of Deputy Commander of the St Augustine Senior Squadron SER-FL-173 and will be Acting Commander until further notice.

04Feb09 - Latest squadron news

  • Over the past few months the St Augustine Senior Squadron (SER-FL-173) has been through a positive transition period. Hence, SER-FL-173 has big plans for 2009. And for that reason the squadron has plenty of opportunities for new members to take on as the squadron sets its target to meet new challenges.
  • The main goal is to transform the squadron to a Composite Squadron where a Cadet program will be developed and put in place. Currently, the unit is a Senior squadron.
  • Knowing how important our youth is, and how Aerospace Education can enlighten young minds, the unit Staff decided to give kids the opportunity to experience the world of aviation through the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program.
  • If you or anyone you know is ready to invest in our kids' future and aerospace education, and join those who may have similar interests in the world of aviation and voluntarism, SER-FL-173 would like to hear from you. Please contact one of the staff members to schedule a visit to a squadron meeting or to obtain more information.
